We are specialist's in Planet Healthy carpet. We are not perfect but we are trying to make a difference. The illustration below shows our manufacturing technique and exactly what makes Bio-Floor™ the only nontoxic, all natural based carpet made in North America. The Bio-Floor™ line is used extensively by those that are concerned about the home environment, concerned about the outdoor environment and those suffering from chemical sensitivity. We have gone to great lengths to design a product that meets the demands of these clients yet sacrifices nothing in the way of styling, comfort and durability. We feel we have created the best bio-based carpet possible and we will continue to diverge from the mainstream and therefore standout for our exclusive focus on this construction ethos. Earth Weave starts by using only pure wool. We apply no pesticides or stain protections that are commonly used by the other wool carpet manufacturers. The application of these chemicals would greatly affect indoor air quality through the off gassing of volatile organic compounds.
The primary backing that the wool fibers are placed into is an industry divergent combination of hemp/bast fiber and cotton, . We chose to use these hardy bast fibers to enjoy the natural advantage of durability, strength, along with mold and mildew resistance. Our all-natural primary backing is specifically designed to be used in our bio-based flooring. The other wool carpet manufacturers use a polypropylene primary just like the ones in standard synthetic based (nylon, polyester) carpet. Earth Weave does not produce carpet with this synthetic polypropylene primary because we have found a natural, and therefore better way.
The wool yarns are locked into place with a natural rubber based adhesive derived from the rubber tree. This adhesive is completely biodegradable and nontoxic as well. This is counter to the styrene butadiene adhesive used in all other wool carpets. Once again, we feel we are forging an exclusive path. We only want to produce carpets that are as natural as possible. Therefore, our carpets do not use styrene butadiene based adhesive even though it is a cheaper alternative and therefore the adhesive all the other manufacturers use.
For the back of the carpet we use a jute secondary. The secondary is there to give the carpet stability. Jute was commonly used in the carpet industry before the introduction of the synthetic backings currently used.. We chose to use jute backing to further our cause of making a natural fiber, natural based carpet. Occasionally other wool carpet manufacturers will use jute as a secondary backing also. When you view the back of the carpet you see the jute and you may think it means the product is bio-based. In their system the jute is covering a synthetic core of polypropylene plastic and styrene butadiene.
As you can see, Earth Weave has developed a unique product that maintains all the criteria of those looking for the purest, least toxic floor covering available. Bio-Floor™ can be used to provide the utmost in comfort and durability while maintaining indoor air quality and your health.
